IGIT, Sarang is an autonomous and fully residential technical institute under the Govt of Orissa located near Talcher on the banks of river Brahmani. Established in the year 1982, the Institute has made steady progress to develop into a National level Institute and has the distinction of being the first Govt. Institute of the State to get accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation of AICTE. Presently, the Institute offers the following courses:
> B.Tech. in Chemical. Civil, Electrical,Mechanical,
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. B.Tech. in
Electronics & Telecommunication and Computer Science
Engineering under self financing scheme(proposed).
Ø Master in Computer Application(MCA)
Ø M.Tech. in Civil(Environmental Science and Engineering) &
Electrical Engineering(Power Electronics and drives).
It has also been proposed to start M.Tech in Mechanical System Design, Industrial Metallurgy and P.G.Diploma in Rural Development and Management.
LOCATION : The place, being located in central Orissa, is well
connected Both rail and road to all parts of the State and the country. IGIT is situated across three National Highways(NH 23,NH 200 and NH 42)and the city of Talcher is an important railway junction.
The Institute is located 160 kms from State capital in the district of Dhenkanal. The nearest Railway stations from which one can reach the Institute are-
- Talcher- 15 kms
- Talcher Thermal(Passanger hault)-07 kms
- Talcher Road- 15 kms
To approach the Institute by Bus, one has to get down at Talcher or Ballhar Chhak and it is 10 and 5 kms respectively from these places. From Angul it is 30 kms. Regular bus services are available from Bhubaneswar/Cuttack to Angul/Talcher. The Biju Pattnaik Airport is 170 kms located at State Capital Bhubaneswar.
POTENTIAL & ACHIEVEMENTS
I. Infrastructual Facilities: The Institute spreads over an area of 176 acres
encompassing a big administrative building, six academic Departments, Central automated Library, Central Computer Centre, Central Workshop, 8 nos of students hostels having accommodation facility for 1000 students, 200 staff quarters, big playgrounds for football, cricket, basket ball courts, badminton courts, volley ball courts, State Bank, Guest House, Hospital, Post Office, Canteen, Students” and Employees” Co-operative Consumer stores, Gymnasium, temple, children park and different clubs etc. Additional land of 200 acres is being alienated for further expansion of the Institute. A full fledged bank counter of S.B.I. with core banking facilities is available in the Inst. premises where every student has to open an account during admission
II. Highly Qualified Faculty : The Institute has a good profile of highly qualified
faculty members. There are 87 numbers of teaching positions in the grades of Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers. Nearly 60% of them have Doctoral degrees and research experiences. The Institute has produced 15 Ph.Ds and in the last three years, its faculty members have contributed about 322 research papers in journals and conferences. The academic and research potential of the faculty members of the Institute is comparable to that of any leading Institute of the country.
III. Well Equipped Laboratories : All the Departments of the Institute have well
developed laboratories having sufficient facilities to cater to the requirements of engineering courses at undergraduate as well as post graduate level. The total cost of the equipments in various laboratories amounts to about Rs. 4 .00cores. Every year, most of the Departments have been successful in securing MHRD and AICTE grants to remove obsolescence from the old set ups and to establish state-of-art laboratotries.
IV. Computer facilities and Internet services : In addition to advanced computing

To CAD/CAM training resources, 24 X 7 internet service provided through VSAT and NIC Net and EDUSAT programmes. The Institute also has a multimedia equipped advanced Communication and Personality Development Lab for group discussion, personal interviews and quiz contests etc. Fully Wi-FY Campus( both Insatitute and Hostels)internet connectivity(24 X7) is available for staff and students.
V. Dress Code: The students must come to the institute with uniform dress. Use
of Institute blazer is compulsory. The blazer colour is z-blue and tie colour is maroon. The dress materials are available in Kalamandir,BBSR./M/s Jayashree Cloth Stores,Hat-tota,Talcher.
VI. Industry Institute Interaction: The Institute has the unique advantage of
being surrounded by a number of major power and process industries such as NALCO,Angul; Mohanadi Coalfields Limited, Talcher; NTPC/TSTPP,Kaniha; NTPC/TTPS, Talcher; Heavy Water Project, Talcher; Nava Chrome fellor Alloys, Meramandali; Orissa Synthetics Limited, Dhenkanal; Bhusan Steels, Meramandali; Jindal Stainless Limited, Duburi and Nilachal Ispat Nigam Limited,Jajpur etc.
The Institute is constantly involved in consultancy assignments and extensive Industry-Institute Interaction with all these organizations and other Central and State Govt and private agencies.
VII. Commendable Record of students’ Performance and Placement :
The Institute is proud of the creditable performance of its students in
fields of acdemic and extra-curricular actrivities winning laurels at the University level and outside. During 2007 the result was 95% i.e. Ist in B.P.U.T., Orissa. On the strength of the high quality technical education they received and with the involvement of a dynamic and dedicated Training and Placement Deptt the students obviously become preferred candidates for recruitment by different agencies.
All the students of the outgoing 2008 batch have got lucrative job offers through campus recruitment in various software, IT and core sector companies or have qualified for public sector jobs and higher studies through GATE with many students getting more than one offer.
